Message to Brides

You have dreamed of this day since you were a little girl, and now, you have found your prince.
I remember the day John & I were married, and the time that went into planning and preparing. The emotions I felt that day should have been captured for posterity. For memory, to share with our children… alas, the moments I dreamed of looking at were dust. They were gone with the day. Oh, it’s not that we didn’t have any photographs taken, but it wasn’t what my heart was looking for. It was standard run of the mill, traditional and BORING! It did not capture the moments between us. So armed with our own disappointment, we vowed to never photograph a wedding like ours was.

Photographing weddings is like being given a backstage pass into someone’s heart. A wedding is the celebration of a life changing event, and it is our privilege to be commissioned to freeze those moments of emotion. We look to capture your hearts for one another on film. We work in color and black & white, looking to capture the beauty, the romance, the soul of your day. We find out what is most important to you, not us; we already did this wedding thing. We believe it is important to stay calm and flexible. This is the only way we can truly move with your day and not against it. It is our job to photograph your wedding and to document all you have put into it, to illustrate the tale of your wedding. To do this we integrate many types of photography, from photojournalism to contemporary portraiture with a little fashion, lifestyle and commercial flavor thrown in for good measure. While we pose some images, it is our desire to make them feel comfortable and look natural, not stiff. We work as a team, so you never know where we may be. We strive to stay out of the way, to capture moments that will get into your heart, ones that will make you say, “Where were they?” “How did they get this?” “I didn’t even see them there.”

You see photographing your wedding day is about more than just lining people up and saying “cheese”. It’s about the union of two families and all that goes with it. It’s about romance and wonder, joy and passion. It’s about details… the beauty of the flowers and the taste of the cake, it’s about the music and the atmosphere of the reception…but when the music fades, the cake is eaten, when the tuxedos have been returned and your dress preserved, your photographs remain. They are what you will return to anniversary, after anniversary. We want you to be able to look at your images with a tear in your eye or a smile on your face and feel like you are experiencing your wedding all over again…

A wedding is divided much like a play, with scenes and acts.

Act I: getting ready
Act II: the ceremony
Intermission: formal photographs
Act III: the reception
Epilogue: living happily ever after

more

Act I:
Our coverage of your day typically begins with you getting ready. This last time you will be with your girlfriends as a “single” woman. It is a time where smiles and laughter, tears and hugs flow freely. The excitement of seeing yourself in your gown with hair and make up complete is breathtaking. And your reaction to the vision is beautiful. During this time I utilize the beauty of black and white to get the emotion of the scene. Not to take away from the bride, but there is that other half, the groom. John begins with black and white photographs of the groom’s experience of pre-wedding jitters. Those last pieces of advice from dad, and help with those blasted cufflinks! Are all moments we rarely think about, but they provide us “girls” with a peek into our man’s world, with many a pleasant result.

Act II:
With taste and discretion, both John & I photograph during the ceremony. Capturing the groom’s eyes when he first sees his bride, dad trying to hold in the tears as he walks his daughter down the aisle and the loving smile of the bride to her groom, are all favorite moments. The exchange of rings and vows, and the final pronouncement of man and wife, “you may kiss the bride”…

Intermission:
It is during the cocktail hour that most formals of family members and the wedding party are taken. Our goal during this time is to work quickly and efficiently to photograph family and friends. We find that enlisting the aid of a friend familiar with both families to help gather them for the photographs is a time saver. And everyone wants to help you have a stress free day. It is also during this time that we like to be able to have a few moments with the two of you. This is when we create the place in which you are just you. When snuggles and kisses happen; when you get to be wrapped up in each other. And intimate moments are born for images that reflect your love for one another.

Act III:
The reception brings us to the celebration. Now that the formalities are over it is a time to relax, and enjoy your guests. Because it is our desire to capture the events as they happen, we do not set the tone for the celebration. You may dance when you choose, cut cake when you choose, and eat when you choose. Usually, your entertainment will keep us apprised of the high points as they will happen. We do like to “steal” you for a few moments to create some reception images, a final ending scene.

Epilogue: happily ever after
This part is up to you….
